Difficult to say for sure.. I use a high dollar scanner for testing this sort of problem... Can be checked with a timing light.. Now you can look at the decal under hood for timing specs and procedure, can disconnect in line timing connector to see if engine rpms drop.. IF so, computer does have control over timing! .. That will turn on check engine light but you can reset by disconnecting battery NEGETIVE cable for a minute.. TPS (throttle position sensor) readings would be a good thing to know also but scanner is really needed for that as well.. Without vehicle present for hands-on testing or codes to go by, that's about all we can help you with... Good luck!
no ckeck engine light there for no codes to be found is what is puzzling me,91000 miles wonder if the control module is advancing the timing
