What is your question?
Hi, I need to change my rear axle bearings. The GM Service Manual has special instructions to "remove the pinion shaft from the case on vehicles without a locking differential" or "with a locking differential remove the shaft part way and rotate the case until pinion shaft touches the housing". My question is how do I know if I have a locking differential?? ANY advice or helpful tips would be greatly appreciated!! Thank u in advance!! I have a 1996 V8 5.7L, 4L60E, 10-bolt, 8.5" rear end (I'm fairly certain on that last part).

If the rear axle has a locking differential, it will have been manufactured by Eaton. Look for manufacturer identification marks on the axle housing. If it is NOT an Eaton, but rather a "corporate" axle, it will have a stamping on the right (passenger side) axle tube near the carrier. You would look for it under the vehicle, facing the rear axle from the front of the vehicle, looking to the left of the carrier. This number would be 8 digits. If this is present, it is a non-locking axle.
Replacement of the AXLE BEARINGS does not involve the pinion gear at all .. You have posted multiple questions concerning this vehicle .. Perhaps you should consider purchasing a better or more accurate repair manual so you have the correct information at hand.. This vehicle was not equipped with a "locking differential" from the factory .. SOME had a limited slip but that is rare .. The majority were standard or open rear gears. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h51w9ZFkpMs
Thanks Pushrod! That video was perfect. I have an open differential. Also, thanks for your patience with me. I know my questions aren't very good because I have a lot to learn about repairs. I have the GM dealership repair manuals for my van. They look more like phone books! Lol
This video should help as well: https://youtu.be/-VYVBVJTJ9s Look around on the YouTube page for more videos - if needed... Pay close attention to the *spider gears* ! Good luck with it.
Thanks Pushrod! That video helped a lot. I hope I don't discover that my axles are worn. I saw a few other videos and learned that I need to check the condition of my pinion bearing. I've been watching all the videos you gave me plus a whole bunch more and I've been taking notes. Thanks again.

My car is in neutral And when I turn the driveshaft to rotate the carrier housing I can hear a faint squeal-like sound coming from the area where the driveshaft connects to the transmission. Is that normal?
Thank you DaveJM! I will check for that. You really helped me out with that.
Good Luck!
