Not sure on 5.0 or .8 have to check sorry. We start the van and try to get it out of park by pressing the brake and it won't budge. And once started only once in a while will it let you shift to drive and in doing that turning the vehicle off to go to the store is not an option. Because it will be stuck in park..I am afraid to take it to a shop due to getting ripped of. . If you need more info please feel free to ask.

possibly your linkage is binding but you need to have it looked at to determine which part is bad. you need to trust someone,ask a friend for a recommendation on a shop
Mine will do this also - so far all I have to do is rock back and forth in my seat once or twice. Seems like something? just hangs and then magically releases.. go figure.. Also had an Astro I actually had to get out and rock the entire van toget the pressure off the drivetrain for the shifter to let loose - to resolve this I ALWAYS used the parking break and let pressure off drivetrain BEFORE putting it in PARK.
i have to pump the break pedal then i here a click and it will come out of park
