Turned out to be the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) Less than $40 at local parts store and easy to install.

Have speedometer repaired and more than likely transmission problem will also be fixed. No use going into a lot of details - this is not a recommended diy repair. https://repairpal.com/repair-shops
