Won't even crank. "Brake" dashboard light comes on when key is turned.
What is your question?
I just bought this 1989 G20 van (with no owner's manual) so hopefully I'm missing something really stupid and easy. Battery is new and fuel pump runs when key is turned to accessory, but when turned to start position absolutely nothing happens--not even a click from the starter, much less cranking. But the "Brake" light on the dashboard comes on and then turns off again as soon as the key is released. OBD gives me the code 12, shows no errors. Has anyone more familiar with these vans ever seen this? ECM maybe?

Sorry, didn't work. Does that always work on a failing starter or should it be removed and bench tested or something?
Glad to hear you don't think it's the ECM. The reason I was worried is because when I bought it, one of the terms of the deal was the battery should be replaced since the old one was leaking. When the previous owner was changing it, I heard a sort of an electrical-sounding crack. I wasn't looking so I don't know what, if anything, happened, but if he caused a short circuit or something, is there anything else that may have been damaged I should check?
I appreciate your help, thanks.
Carefully jumper small wire at starter solenoid to the big battery cable just above it.....you will get sparks,ok .... but it should force starter to turn...if not starter is defective! ECM is not part of cranking circuit.......Now if the starter turns post results for more info....Just be careful not to short battery cable to any ground... just to the small wire!
Yeah, got the sparks, but nothing else. Looks like I'm on the hook for a new starter. The good news is it's so nice and roomy working under that van--as opposed to my car, it's far more comfortable. Let's hear it for ground clearance!
Thanks for your help in the diagnostics...happy motoring!
