How do you get the ipod player to respond to the forward (next song) & backward buttons like they used to?

What is your question?

The radio plays fine. But now the only way to get my ipod to begin playing anything is to "browse music", pick an album, and hit the selected song. And the forward (next song) & backward buttons no longer work?

What makes this problem better or worse?

cannot get the ipod player to start on its own?
