my 2013 equniox will not shift out of 1st gear in manual shift mode works fine in drive what could cause this?

What is the purpose of attempting to shift manually? There could be an issue with the sensor that provides shift lever position data, or some kind of wiring concern. In some ways, I wonder if the method of shift lever movement that is being used is acceptable as per owners manual instruction. Hard to know without hands on use. www.repairpal.com/repair-shops
