My Equinox has a shorted wire in the electrical system controlling the driver's side window-itis being repaired; however, was upset about the cost-they charged me 294.50 for this-is this a normal charge for this type service-they did not say that they would have to replace the motor.

If they replaced the motor, they should have called you and gotten the OK for replacing the motor with a new estimate for the total repair. There is no normal charge for wiring problems, if that's what it was, because each case is different and finding the problem in the wiring is the tough part of the job. They still should have kept you informed about the cost and the need for a window motor. The total price seems reasonable to me for diagnosis and motor replacement because the motor could cost over $100, plus diagnosis and labor. If the motor was faulty (shorted) and it was assumed that the wiring was faulty instead of the motor, then you should have been informed about that too. I'd have suspected that the motor was shorted before I'd assume there was a short in the wiring because faulty window motors are much more common than shorted wiring.
