we came home and removed the key next day the key will not go in. I noticed the stearing wheel is not locked is that the issue
What makes this problem better or worse?
tried moving the wheel no effect

Hello, Dave here, contributing to RepairPal and providing expert advice since 2010. Check to see that the shift lever is in the park position, for an automatic transmission equipped vehicle. It is possible that it is not locked in park which is preventing the ignition lock cylinder from excepting a key. Beyond this, I would suggest someone local has a look at it to find out what's going on.
