My A6 gets stuck in park because the locking mechanism does not release when I start the car. What is the fix?

A common cause for any vehicle where the shift lever cannot be moved from the locked "park" position is a signal missing from the brake light switch. You may find that you have no functioning brake lights also! The switch or wiring could be at fault; testing is required.
