The car only starts in reverse what does that mean

I think it might be the adjustment of the shift linkage on the transmission under the center console. The car should only be able to start in Park or Neutral. The Neutral Safety Lock Out Switch is on the bracket that holds the shifting lever and it sounds like its come loose and needs to be re-adjusted.
