Hi, this is Bo, an auto expert on RepairPal's Car Genius team! Nothing more fun than mystery fluid! The fluid that came out when changing the electric power steering assist motor on your 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt is likely motor or steering shaft lubricant. Certain models of the Cobalt use electric power steering systems that do not require traditional power steering fluid. These systems operate without hydraulic fluid and therefore do not need fluid added or changed. If the manufacturer states there is no need to add power steering fluid and there's no designated reservoir for it, you can trust that the system is designed to operate without it.
