why does my car lose power, when trac light comes on when slipping in the snow?

this is my first time in the snow with this 99 chevy cavalier 2.2l, and if my wheels spin in the snow and the trac light comes on the car loses power/ will not accellerate at all. is this whats suppose happens with these vehicle when trac control engages or is this a problem?

All sound normal to me, the computer is reducing engine power because the drive wheel is slipping. The trac light is coming on to indicate the system is active.
