how do i confirm a fuel sending unit is bad when i have a mis-reading gage? CAN THIS BE DONE WITH A SCANNER YOU PLUG INTO THE OSD2 port?

The only way to truly test a fuel level sending unit is on the bench with and ohm meter. That being said, chance are the fuel level sensor is at fault for your erratic gauge operation and there may be a fault code stored in the powertrain control module relating to the fuel level sensor circuit.
