My car will crank on it's own when the key is in but in the off position sometimes. and other times it will do it after you you start the car, the starter will stick on. i think it is the ignitin switch but am not sure. I just replaced the head gasket and was in the middle of going through the key relearn precedure for the theft system

I would remove the cowling around the ignition switch, the next time the car "cranks over" of it own accord I would disconnect the electrical connector to the ignition switch. If the car continues to crank over with the electrical connector at the switch disconnected then it is likely that the starter is shorted out internally. It is the yellow wire at the ignition switch (becomes a purple wire at the starter that brings power to the starter under cranking conditions.
