Hello, The battery is likely the cause of it failing to start now, but before, the most likely issue is the torque converter clutch locking up at all times. Charge the battery to full, let the car sit so it is not flooded with fuel, make sure there is not a ton of gas in the engine oil, and instead of putting the car in R or D, put it in 2 or 1. Let me know the result.
if car cranks, your battery should be fine as the starter is receiving power from it to do its job. the issue sounds like the car either does not have ignition or fuel for it to turn over and maintain idle. if the car does idle but turns off when put into drive it could be the lock up as mentioned
At first be for the no start issue started the car would start and run when you put it in drive the oil gauge whould go low and cut off when u put the car back in to park it would start back up and run in idle untill u try for drive mode now All the car does is crank but no turn over i changed the fuel pump and no results still i looked under neath the car and i see oil spots and some transmission spots as well Do u think its not GETTING oil pressure and making the car not to start
The car wont start in 1 and 2 and i noticed oil underneath the car when u try to start it checked the dip stick it was low on oil im wondering if it has a bad oil pressure switch or oil sending unit cause its showing low oil on the instrument pannel
Right, No automatic vehicle should start in any range but N or P, but once it starts, try putting it in 2 or 1 instead of D or R. Lockup torque converters were fairly new, and I don't remember if the Caprice got them or not before 1993, but an 88 still has a chance. Lockup torque converters for GM are not allowed to engage in 2 or 1, so if it is engaging as soon as you put in in D or R, the car will bog down. It's a test, not a solution, but it could help get you closer to the issue. Next time you crank the engine, check to see if fuel is squirting. Whether this is a throttle body version or carbureted, you will still be able to see the fuel squirt into the manifold when the air filter is removed. Also, do you hear the fuel pump running? Have you already checked fuses and relays?
