Car smoking from vents when started after work? Heat gauge did not show hot?

My car was smoking from inside air vents. The heat and oil gauge were not on hot? I put some anti-freeze and water in the extra container under the hood and started it up - some smoke appeared from the radiator cap$ What could be the problem?
