When check engine light comes on and then goes off will it still store code

maybe and maybe not.my neighbors 97 f150 had 3 different codes stored,BUT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS NOT ON.yes the bulb worked,i checked that first.and get this,it passed SMOG TEST the same day???
