What would cause my truck to spputter and cut off then not crank back up

I have a 1995 Chevy c1500 pickup. I get almost home and it starts sputtering and then shuts off. It will not start back up. Drove for almost an hour with no problems. As soon as I pulled in my neighborhood it started acting like it was out of gas and backfired. Smelt like i had just shot off some fireworks. What could the problem be
