I set the distributor at#1 plug at 6 oclock position like the book indicated, #1 plug sparks when manually turning distributor with rotor pointing at 6 o clock position and the cap with the number one plug wire starting off in the number 6 position and following counterclockwise from 1 to 6 in that order also I have a discrepancy whether or not top dead center is the first or second mark on the harmonic balancer apparently the Piston comes up at top dead center with the mark on the right but the book says to set the distributor to the mark on the left not sure how this affects top dead center

Remove front spark plug - drivers side .. put finger over hole plug cane out if - have a helper BUMP starter in small increments until you feel compression then stop - now manually turn crank balancer clock wise to TDC and leave it there. Set distributor rotor to NUMBER ONE position on dist cap - install distributor. Number one cylinder has got to be at top dead center on ‘compression stroke’ for proper distributor alignment - using the described method is bulletproof.. *Hands-on* assistance from personnel familiar with procedure may be needed .. Good luck!
After confirming compression stroke using finger - and manually turning crank - position the marker line on the balancer with 0 on the pointer - that’s top dead center for number one cylinder .. Now distributor can be correctly installed - with rotor pointing to location of number one on cap.. Specific ignition timing procedures must be followed after distributor replacement. It is important to reference mark the old distributor BEFORE removal - then this task becomes MUCH easier!
