The highest priced fuel pump at www.rockauto.com is around $380 so even if the shop charged you $500 for the pump that leaves $600 in labor. Way too much. Labor should be no more than $300 and the pump probably can be had for less than $380. Just an aside my father is a Valpo grad 1956 I think.
i just replaced my fuel pump in my 2002 chevy extreme. i found a pump at autopartswarehouse.com for a total of $106.00. shipping was free and got it in 2 days. if you have some mechanical knowledge you can do this. don't by the drop in assembly. you have to take it out anyway.REMOVE as much fuel as possible to lighten its weight. be careful when lowering tank as there is a ground connection by hose inlet. carefully disconnect fuel lines and note where they go.undo electrical connections.TIP: try to support tank so no one has to stand there and hold it. remove the retainer clip and carefully pull assembly out. watch the float arm and bottom screen filter. may have to angle it, be patient. once you have unit out pour any fuel left in unit into a pan. you will have to remove the pump from unit. disconnect the electric lines and hoses.spray some lubricant around rubber donut holding pump in place. you will have to work pump out by moving it side to side. it will come out ,but be careful for there is a screen filter attached to the bottom of pump. the kit you order comes with only one screen filter. put new screen filter on the on the pump that drops back in the assbly. you may be able to leave the one on the outside of assbly and blow it and clean it. attach screen to pump. you should connect the hoses before dropping pump into assmbly.drop pump into unit and connect wires. lower the unit into gas tank. put new gasket seal on with some assembly grease. may take 2 people, but going to have to push down on unit to get retaining clip in place.from there just reverse steps and you should have it. should take 2-3 hours but think of all the money you saved and the knowledge you gain. save approx. $300.00 - $500.00 doing it yourself.
