I have a 2009 Chevrolet Aveo. The hold light has come on two times since I have owned the vehicle. The first time at about 37,000 (just out of warranty) the vehicle started running very poorly. The check engine light came on as well as the hold light blinking. At first I thought it was a transmission problem, It was NOT. The problem with this gem of a car is that the spark plugs need to be replaced by 35,000 miles. The check engine light was due to the ignition coil pack being bad (cylinder 3) All four need to be replaced at once. After replacing the coil pack (now costs about $100 at the dealership)and plugs the check engine light went out and the hold light went out. This was an extremely easy repair. I walked my 13 year old daughter through the repair.
The second time the hold light went on was about a week ago. I now have about 52,000 miles. The light came on for no apparent reason. The only unusual thing that happened was that i accidentally spun the tires in the rain just before the light came on. The owners manual will tell you to bring it in asap because there could be serious problems. I couldn't believe i was having another major problem (there was no check engine light on this time). My guess was that the spinning of the tires could have had something to do with causing the hold light to go on and blink. What i did was disconnect the battery over night in an attempt to reset the light. It worked, and I haven't seen the light come back on in over a week. I drive about 50 miles a day on the highway as well as stop and go traffic. I'll call that a win.
These lights come on for a reason. If the light comes back on i will be planning on taking it in to a transmission specialist. I am not trying to say you should ignore your lights but sometimes a little effort before taking it into your mechanic can save you a bunch of money. I just wanted to share what I did with you all. Als,o you can have your check engine codes read my many auto part stores usually at no charge.
I would never buy another Aveo or recommend one to anyone. In my opinion, they are poorly manufactured vehicles. I guess i should have guessed that any vehicle with a 3 year 36k mile warranty has such a short warranty for a reason! I hope I could help someone with my experience.
If the HOLD mode light flashes indicates a malfunction in the automatic transmission. Take the car to the Chevrolet Dealership.
Since 2009 they have changed the thermostat, had a recall on the spark plug shoe & plugs at 11000 miles. The hold light came on at 12000 miles the dealership couldn't find the problem, it clears and restarts slipping back to second gear. The fuel pump went at 22000 miles, now at 26556 the hold light is flashing the button is not the problem and it's stuck in 2nd gear and over heating. The extended warrenty is just about over and the dealership is trying to decide what is causing the problem before they change the transmission. Lets hope they decide before the warrenty expires completely. Has anyone had problems with the dealerships stalling to repair...
My wife's 2009 Chevy Aveo has been a pretty good little car for the last 4 years until she had a power problem going to work this week and blinking dash lights (Engine and Hold blinking)! I went to her work after her telling me it had a loss of power and would not go into high gear! I drove it to my mechanic and thought for sure something was wrong with power and the Transmission!!! I had it looked at by my mechanic and first he changed the spark plugs, didn't solve the problem. I had read on other sites some had same issues! We talked it over and we both thought the coil pack needed replacing and he replaced it and problem was solved! The coil pack was all one piece cost $180 and the computer check said it was the #3 coil pack! It is running great no blinking lights and trans shifts smooth no problems and goes in to high gear fine! Car has 113k miles! The cost was $180 coil pack + $20 spark plugs, $100 labor plus tax Total $320
Remove the terminals from the battery and touch them both together for about 10 sec. That will reset the system. Then remove your intake valve and spray some fuel injection cleaner. The car will sound like it want to turn off but that is fine. Then drive it right after. That should solve your problem. I have an 09 Chevy aveo and that solved that problem. Chevy vehicle transmissions are usually controlled by the air intake and that is what needs cleaning. Try it and see what happens
I just bought a 2009 Aveo with 115k miles for $2,800. I drove it twice checked everything I could think of and it seemed legit. On my way to work last night I was turnjng the corner into my workplace and the HOLD light came on. I hope I didn't buy a lemon. I will be sooo ticked! Can someone give me some advice on what to do please.
I have a 2009 Aveo 5 LT with 48,000 miles. It's been a good commuter car. While driving @ 70 mph. on cruise control all was fine but when I disengaged cruise and within a mile, the engine started to misfire badly. The check engine light came on and when continuing to drive the "hold" light began to flash. Periodically both would flash when on the highway accelerating and was very rough idling @ stops. I took it to my mechanic within 15 miles of this starting to have it diagnosed. Diagnostic code reading was P30302 ... #2 cylinder misfire.
The first questions were obvious ... when were the spark plugs changed and when did I last fill up with fuel. The plugs had less than a 100 miles since changed and were clean. He inspected the coil pack and it was ok. His initial thought was contaminated fuel / clogged injector. He advised to add 2 cans (20 oz. each) of Seafoam to the 1/2 tank of fuel remaining and drive on open highway until it was empty. In doing so, it did run better, but not great. Still had misfire @ low rpm. and when passing. Engine light stayed on and every-now-and-then the hold light would flash.
I decided to try anything I could to resolve the problem before I let the mechanic do a complete diagnoses on the vehicle (as yet he hadn't charged me a dime) but said it could be a simple issue costing $100 or so or something major that he couldn't estimate. First i decided to re-gap the plugs. Most "experts" suggest to gap the plugs (copper) @ 40 mm; manufacture settings are between 37 - 43 mm. I originally set them at 40 but reset them to 38. The engine ran better, but not 100%. Then I cleaned all connections to the fuel injection and 0/2 sensors as well as the air flow modulator. Again, better but still had a "dump" on hard acceleration. Then I replaced the air filter.
HOLLY CRAP!!!!!! That was it!!!! Although it looked clean for the most part, apparently fine particles had built up and restricted flow to the injector system. It has been 300+ miles now with no problems and car is running great.
Although my reply is long, I just wanted to share my experience. There are a lot of negative comments regarding Aveos out there but I've been very satisfied with mine. I guess what I'm trying to convey here is, if this situation happens to you, try the basics first. Replace / re-gap the spark plugs ($8.00), replace the air filter ($10.00), clean all related connections and fittings ($0.00) and if you want, add 1 can of Seafoan to 1/4 tank of gas and drive on highway for at least 50 miles ($12.00) to clean injectors .... total $30.00. If the condition persists after this replace the coil pack ($140.00). This will most likely resolve the misfire problem.
The hold light flashing does not always indicate problems with the transmission. It's just trying to tell you that the transmission is being overriden by another system. In my case, the clean air intake hose dry rotted and pollen had built up in the throttle body, covering the port for the throttle position sensor. A $3.99 bottle of throttle body cleaner, a toothbrush from the dollar store and some good duct tape to repair the clean air intake until I can find one under $70.00. Running like new, no light and shifting is perfect. All systems are inter-dependent nowadays. Start with simple and cheap and work towards the complicated and expensive.
I had a 2005 aveo with a po300 misfire code with the hold light and checking engine light blinking I change spark plugs,coil,wires clean the throttle body,replace air filter and still was blinking wouldn't go into overdrive went back and check over everything I found the vacuum hose from the valve cover to the intake was missing put on a new hose tried it again and problem solved no more blinking hold light or checking engine light and car shift fine and goes into overdrive so before spending money on all those parts check your vacuum hoses good it will save u a lot of money.

Hello everyone: Well, my HOLD light came on and the reason why that light came on is because when you put the gear shift down to reverse or to drive, there is a hold button that can be accidentally pressed. What you can do is to make sure that your hand or fingers are not touching that button when you shift in automatic. If you have a manual transmission, then that Hold button can be easily pressed when you shift gears. If you have further problems with that, you will have to take it to the dealership (actual Chevrolet dealership and tell them what the problem is). It could be as simple as replacing the gear shift. If that is the case, then you will get 4 keys instead of 2. When you bought the car, you got 2 keys, one for the actual car set, and the 2nd one as emergency. When my gear shift problem happened to me 3 times in 3 months time, the final time when it got replaced, I had gotten 4 keys and had to figure out which ones were for the doors and which ones were for the ignition/engine. So, in this case, it is the gear shift problem that is telling you that the Hold button has either been pressed, or your gear shift has died or is about to die. If you still see the hold button lighting up, please take it to the dealership. It will cost you close to $400.00 or so to get it replaced entirely. Good luck! Also if you have a 3 year/36,000 mile warranty on any vehicle, you should get it extended for another year or so...and you can pay up front when you buy the car for that extended warranty. Because you never know after the 3rd year of the year that things will go bad. Good luck! Hope this helps.
