Fuel filter location??? I have a 2006 Chevrolet Avalanche LTZ71 with under 100,000 miles. Rus great until yesterday. Engine "chugs" when first started cold. Then evens out and is smooth after a few minutes. Fuel filter has never been changed. Pretty sure that's the culprit. Is it really on the driver's side frame rail?

The fuel filter is contained in the fuel sender assembly inside the fuel tank. The fuel filter housing is made to withstand maximum fuel system pressure, exposure to fuel additives, and changes in temperature. There is no service interval for fuel filter replacement. As a result, this is not likely to be the cause of your concern. You really need to have testing performed - an EGR concern - for example maybe - or an air intake / air - fuel ratio concern likely exists. www.repairpal.com/repair-shops
Intake manifold gaskets are problematic on the LS engine - symptoms are indicative of leaking gaskets - reseal after engine warm up. *Hands-on* vacuum leak testing required while engine is COLD as part of the diagnosis. This is just a possibility!
Excellent diagnosis! The gaskets may be leaking but I doubt it. The engine had a "top half rebuild" 4 years ago when a constant shudder was detected. It was a cam shaft defect. Two of the lobes had been "scored" down the middle by the lifters creating a "shoulder" on each side of two lobes. Ran better than new when I got it back. Vacuum leak test is next. Thanks!
Thanks, and yes, you are absolutely right. The filter is permanent and is part of the fuel sender assembly. I recently purchased a FIXD device. It works great! It gave me two new codes indicating "lean mixture" in Bank 1 and in Bank 2. It is an EGR issue. Stay tuned for updates. Its running smooth presently.
