My traction active alarm comes on frequently. I would like to know what causes this and how to check the sensor to see if it is dirty or faulty.

This could be normal operation-everytime the system notices a traction problem it will react including shuting off fuel supply.
Sounds more likey to be a wheel speed sensor problem. Best to have a professional that can access GM service bulletins. As you're a novice, all I would recommend you attempt would be to find all your wheel speed sensor connectors for the front and rear and mearly disconnect and reconnect them. Sometimes water intrusion happens at these connectors causing rust and resistance of the electrical circut. If it corrects the problem, I'd suggest you use what's called dielectric silicone grease, disconnect those connecters once more and pack each full with the grease and reconnect them.
