OBD Codes C1284 & C1286 displaying. 2001 Cadillac ElDorado ETC 84,000. Could a loose ground be throwing these codes. The interior seats & carpeting were completely taken out then placed back in. Display: Service Stability System. Symptoms: When driving it does not pull to any side or attempt to brake. what it does do is loose power almost like it was shifted into neutral, engine tries to accelerate. Research : Possibility steering wheel sensor, VSES Sensors Uncorrected, Lateral Accelerometer Circuit, SWPS inputs, yaw rate sensor and possible ground short. If the EBTCM doesn't see this startup sensor output change will post the 1284 code. The issue is caused by either: 1. Ground/Short 2. The wiring between sensor and EBTCM 3. The sensor itself 4. The EBTC Any diagrams and/or instructions how & where to check for these would be greatly appreciated. Also if replacing the stering sensor would this require being done at the dealership only?

Hello, unfortunately, wiring diagrams are proprietary to the vehicle manufacturers and the manual companies that license that information, so you'll have to consult a local repair shop to borrow their diagrams if they are willing, or purchase your own to get the information you are seeking. I would think that any programmable and calibrated component would require replacement by a dealership or repair facility with the proper diagnostic equipment.
I've been fighting the same problem for a while in my 01 ETC that has about 95,000 miles on it. Have you had any luck? If so would you share what it was? The Steering Position Sensor has been discontinued by GM and not available at the dealership any longer, there are a few aftermarket ones around, but EXPENSIVE. I haven't tried to replace it since I'm not sure that it is the cause (I throw both C1284 and C1286 codes). I removed the accelerometer from under the passenger seat and checked it on the bench and it seemed OK, but I didn't check the wiring. I have removed the ABS fuse (10 A fuse in block under hood) and that disables the Traction Control which has caused the problem with the engine revving like it shifted to Low or Neutral to go away. It also has disabled the ABS and I would rather fix it than drive like this.
8 Jan 18 - Follow-up: Ours ended up being the Lateral Accelerometer under the front passenger seat. The original part #25697709 has been discontinued however the replacement part # 25702490. The Car has now been driven roughly 300 miles in a week, no codes are showing up, currently the system is normal.
