how do I replace the VSS ?

What is your question?

The "sevice transmission" reads on the dash. I purchased an OBD II code reader, and it retreived code "PO717" input turbine speed sensor "A" circuit / no signal.I've ordered and received the new AC Delco speed sensor, p/n 24207491, but I don't recall seeing this on the transmission, when I changed the filter and pan gasket...is it external, or inside the pan ?
