Why car cut off with half tank of gas

Hello, I cannot imagine a reason that the fuel pump would fail with a half tank of gas. The pump and sending unit would be submerged in the fuel in the tank. Perhaps a vapor lock concern with the evaporative emissions system could be present? It's way too hard to know without having hands on testing of the vehicle performed while the problem is occurring.
