why does it hate short trips?

I have to leave it running as you have to try to start it otherwise.Lights are on but as the old saying goes,"nobody home'. I almost got stuck at the local domestic abuse shelter but I got so frustrated I threw it into reverse and left.Probably not smart but I was upset as it was.When I go short distances(grocery store) it pulls the doesn't want to start.If it is the starter how much is labor so I am not taken advantage of and how much are starters?I never force the issue just gently try again.I took it to the dealer who said everything was fine..ok is it me or the car?What else would cause this?
