Hopefully not a body jammed too tight in there.....just kidding. The lock mechanism may have rust that keeps in from releasing. A good heavy lube may fix this problem. Secondly, a plastic clip may have broke or a spring. Need to inspect to find cause.
how do I get the gate open to even get to the lock mechanism? This happened after the care was covered in ice so I am assuming water got in there but I can get it open to inspect it.
Pull off the plastic paneling on the hatch. Behind there is the locking mechanism. There's a lever on it probably on the driver side that's kind of shiny looking try pushing it up and down and seeing if the door opens especially if somebody's pulling from the outside
