when i start my car the temp gage goes craze and sometimes the light will go on

my car sat for about 6 months and i have started it about once in every two week but it ran out of gas , i had a hard time getting it going but did with the help of o can of engine starter (eather), but now after it starts and after a short time the temp gage will dance back and forth from hot to cold and after a bit more the light will com on and stay on ,but the car is not overheating
