in cold weather, transmission will not go in gear; reverse or forward. After car warms up, it will go into gear and the rest of the day; it's fine. It did it last winter, also. We took it to a mechanic and he didn't do a diagnosis, just said it needed to be rebuilt for $1500.00, and we don't have that kind of money.
He's probably right, unfortunately. The concern you have sounds like an internal mechanical one, not an "easy" to replace sensor or other component. Certainly you can get a second opinion - here is a link to some shops near you.
