This happened when we were in Cades Cove, Tenn. Everything is fine. We get back in the car and try to start it and nothing happens, it will not come out of park. Hours later the mechanic turns the key and the car starts. Cannot find a problem. Also have dinging that goes off randomly for no reason.

I had the same issue but fortunately for me it just worsened over time. Although of course when I did get set for the final time it would not unstick. And independent mechanic was familiar with the issue on GM cars especially Buicks. he had to take apart the gear shifter and slide the plastic sheet back into the correct spot and remove any debris that had fallen down in it as you said this often is the culprit that locks up the shifter Answer #2 Miles Auto Services (884 Answers) , Richmond, VA - (804) 457-6241 milesauto January 03, 2013, 05:54 Profile_thumbnail Master The shift lock control feature was intended to prevent drivers from shifting out of Park with the vehicle running without the brakes applied. However, if the ignition switch is in the Accessory (ACC) position, it may be possible on some vehicles to move the shift lever out of Park WITHOUT first activating the brake. The shift lock control system is ONLY active when the ignition switch is in the RUN or ON position. Note: not all ignition switches have a accessory position. Try that first otherwise the shift interlock mechanisum will need to be checked for problem. Reply Flag This
