my buick lasabre hesitates going into first gear and when it finds the gear it makes a clanking sound especially in a bind

Seak out a certified ATRA shop and have them check it. If you have a delay engagement of more than 2 sec, it could be low fluid, filter loose, drain back problem or you need an internal inspection. Lip seals maybe going bad.
