Why is my Enclave still overheating after replacing waterpump/removed thermostat

My Enclave began overheating a few months ago. There was obviously a leak because I had to replenish coolant regularly, which solved the issue. When adding coolant stopped working, my buddy removed the thermostat (tried to replace it but had issues.getting the new one in. He said with no thermostat it will constantly run coolant through the engine, preventing it from.over heating, but that didn't work. He explained that that means the waterpump is bad. Replaced it and it's still overheating. He explained the system may need flushed. Anyone else been through this?
