replaced fuel level sending unit, gas gauge still reads empty

What is your question?

I pulled the fuel pump and examined the fuel level sending unit and saw that all of the fingers except one, that ride on the rheostat were missing. So I replaced the sending unit with a new one put everything back together, started the car and the gauge still reads empty, does not move at all. Are there any other things that will cause the gauge to not function properly or am I missing something else?
