I have bought several new light sockets and bulbs for the passenger side rear break light. For some reason the socket doesn't make contact and my sensor in the dash keeps coming on. The speaker system is located on that side and I have a hard time getting to the break light from the trunk. What could the problem be? The socket and light bulb are new and screwed in tightly.

I had this problem for a long time, I changed the bulb several times and after each speed bump I would get the warning sign "check brake lights". Anyway the solution for me was to change the thing the holds the light bulb. Oh and stay away from the cheap light bulbs, they will burn out and ruin that white cover that holds the bulb!
Must not have a good ground check the left side to see what the difference is, maybe something is out of sequence on the right side but is correct on the left.
there is a ground problem that can cause this. check your wire connectors to see if they have been hot , the dealer has a connector pack fix, which is a connector wire and pins , to repair the ground problem.
There is a good pdf written by an electrician, I have the same problem and going to try and get a new socket for now. The short/metal problem causes the contact to destroy bulbs and sockets. Welding would fix the contact area, or replacing the whole assembly is more expensive. search google for - BMW X5 Tail Lamp Assembly Repair By Myles H. Kitchen M.H. Same problem on both sides. After changing bulbs and sockets which worked temporarily, I came up with a solution which has worked (more than 2 years now). I took the sockets out and "built up" the contact tabs using a soldering iron and some wire/solder. It seems that the contact tabs on the socket eventually loose connectivity with the housing as the tabs bend up. This has worked long term and saves the cost of purchasing new parts.
Thank you for your response.......so what do you suggest I should do?
