If the radio & tape ,single CD or changer functions work ,radio scans stations, steering controls work ; you have a bad power supply for the display. NOT power supply, but a "display power supply". On 2001,2002 radios Alpine OEM says they are no longer avail.. OPTIONS: (1) Call Alpine (OEM div.) and ask about availability of a refurbished unit. Should be about $485.00 w / 90 day warranty (2) Call around to junkyards . Typical price would be $275 to $350. Remove the existing radio and drive to the dismantler's site and ask if you can plug it in before buying. Electronic parts aren't returnable. No, you cannot buy the single CD player with the larger screen if you had a head unit with the smaller screen & cassette. The plugs are different & the Single CD unit won't control the changer. (3) Go to competent mobile electronics shop ( most mechanics don't know or want to deal with this) and look for a replacement unit that has the functions you want. They will have a proper dash kit and a radio adapter harness that will mate the radio to the factory wiring. Be aware that you are losing the factory functions such as navigation, 6-disc changer and possibly steering wheel controls. Don't worry. The newer after - market radios have WI-FI connectivity , I pod docking & syncing to the screen, hands-free navigation and a host of other features. Note: Stay away from radios from the Far East advertised on Ebay & Amazon that say they are factory replacements for BMW. I have installed a few . They have problems with fit , defective units and you can forget about warranty. Good Luck
