Bought a new key for the X5 and now I don't know why it won't start

What is your question?

Recently bought a new key for my car and now the new key nor the old doesn't work. I know it not my starter because I ran a Hotwire to it and it still crank but doesn't turn over. Kind of lost on what should I do any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
