why my camshaft position sensor keeps going out on my 2008 BMW X3?

My 2008 BMW X3 camshaft position sensor keeps going out. I have replace it once already and it has gone out. The symptoms are the several dash lights come on like the 4x4, brake light, airbag light, abs light all come on and the car runs rough and when turning and going in reverse it seems like there is a dragging going on. I would appreciate any help you could provide. Oh yeah I do have a engine oil leak on the car.

The engine oil leak should not have effect on the sensor.
All those lights are coming on because the engine is turning off and back on.
The issue is likely a bad wire in the wiring harness.
Open the hood and shake the wires for the cam position sensor while the engine is running, in fact, shake the whole harness between the sensor and engine control module. You want to see if it hiccups when you move, shake, bend a certain section.
You can use just a little force, but remember that 11 year old plastic/rubber likes to crack.
