I took it to a specialty shop and the diagnostic read mechanical problem with the transfer case. Is this a major problem or could it be a sensor gone bad? Also, sometimes after I shut down I can hear a "racheting" sound that comes from underneath the car. the car also feels slugish and acts like it's going to completly stall, this usually happens when I take the car to 5000RPMs. What I do is I shut the car down and when the I restart it the car acts normal but check engine light stays on. I don't rev the car so it wont start to act up .

i'm taking the x3 back to the shop tomorrow. He's going open the transfer case to if there is any damage. the system has been reset but it comes back on moments after it starts moving.
Two things could either go wrong here: 1. The motor actuator for the transfer case has malfunctioned. There is a plastic gear inside that gets chewed up. $950 oem 2. Your transfer case is going out. Make sure you change the oil at least every 50k. Have an expert mechanic do it with the correct oem oil. Rebuilt transfer case $3500.
everything has been deleted and reset but the 3 light come back on.
