What is your question?
Mechanic said I must have hit something on the road and caused a ding in the right rear wheel. He said that I might need to replace the wheel not the tire.
What makes this problem better or worse?
The indicated light came on after a long freeway drive.
How long has your 2006 BMW X3 had this problem?

Hello, For a 2006 model, the wheel should not be more than a couple hundred dollars, however a ding is not going to ruin a wheel. The only time you should replace the wheel is if it is bent, cracked, or deformed. Deformity takes many forms, no pun, but the only deformity that actually necessitates replacement are: -tire can no longer seal against wheel -wheel cannot be balanced due to out of roundness So, if the tire holds air, the wheel is not cracked, and the wheel and tire assembly can be balanced, you should be fine. However, significant concern can arise if the edge of the rim is missing a large chunk. Now, since the vehicle is 12 years old, your exact wheel will be floating around salvage yards from here to Spain, so I don't see any reason to purchase one new when your other three wheels are used.
