Automatic headlights not coming on automatically

Headlight switch is left in the automatic position all the time. Recently the little light by the switch does not come on; when I get out and look, the lights are no longer coming on automatically. They *do* work in the manual position, though, and after several minutes of driving with lights on that way I can swithc back to auto and it works until next startup.
