Overheating system comes on but car is not running hot. Temp is below 250 degree

I think you may have excessive engine temperature after all. What are you using to measure it? Are you able to access engine coolant temperature using a BMW compatible diagnostic tool? 248 degrees Fahrenheit - or 120 degrees Celsius -- is the top end of the temperature range for the engine.
