Why am I getting a “replace remote control battery” under Vehicle Status?

While sitting in my car listening via Bluetooth to an audiobook I see a triangle on my left dashboard. The accompanying message under Vehicle Status says “Replace Remote Control Battery”. When I start up and drive the triangle/message doesn’t go out.
