Can halogen headlight housing be upgraded to xenon

I’d like to know if I can use the old original e39 xenon parts from the back of my headlight housing shell and add on to a brand new OEM housing even though it states it’s for halogen. I can just take the halogen connections off. It’s just a plastic box right? The connections are the same correct? Lastly, I want to make sure I do not need to open up the housing and install any special internal lens or anything like that. Thank you.
