1997 is very close to the changeover of OBD. I do believe you have the first generation OBD, to confirm there is a black circle plug socket and cover in the RHF area just beside the shock tower, these types unfortunately require a tool acquired at any BMW dealer. There are 2 pins to be shorted for a certain period of time, but save yourself time and grief and visit your nearest BMW dealer, they would be more then happy to help.
