I like to change my own oil and have in everything i have owned for 20 years. I bought this bmw used and changed the oil today and wanted to know if anyone new how to reset the oil life indicator.

A special tool is required unfortunately, under the bonnet there is a socket connector and cover in the RHF near the shock tower, simply twist the cover and the cap comes off exposing a series of pins The special tool shorts 2 certain pins and resets the service indicator If you ask any BMW dealer politely they will be more than happy to reset it for you. UNLESS your car is the E39 facelift, then simply hold the left cluster button with the car off, then flick on terminal R, first click of the key and continue holding the button until a display of the remaning milage till service due is lit. let go of the button and hold it again, the words "reset" or your milage reading should blink, let go of the button and press it once...DONE
