Would putting a good DMTL pump on a bad vapor canister make the new pump go bad?

replaced an old DMTL pump but not the vapor canister, after doing so, different code popped up relating to DMTL pump, replaced the canister AND the gas cap, light still on, could it be that putting the new pump on the bad canister made it go bad?
