1998 bmw 328i. 3 inch long hole in reservoir probable cause of overheating issue. How long have you had this problem? present

Your vehicle is almost 20 years old -- in fairness there is no "normal" anymore. Things happen due to age and normal usage. Now, it could be a result of another extenuating issue, but without checking the system out thoroughly "hands on", it's hard to really say.
