More than likely you have air trapped in cooling system, you have to bleed these systems to get all the air out. air will not cool and/or circulate hence the overheating. take to a reputable shop and have the cooling system "professionally serviced". if you did indeed get it very hot you may have done some damage to engine these are not highly forgiving engines to abuse/neglect. They should be able to pressure test system and make sure everything is operating correctly including the cooling fans, radiator cap after they service the cooling system or as part of the service. don't drive this very far with it getting hot youre not helping anything!
